duff's device.. details?

a friend of mine told me about an article (apparently in
comp.unix.internals however it no longer exists on my system)
regarding duff's device. he was able to furnish me with the general
idea (unraveling loops to make memory shifts more efficient) but
couldn't find the article with the details.

If anyone has either the original article/thread or other details
about this little piece of code (and maybe some details about what
the compiler is likely to do with it), I would be most grateful for a
copy.
