cat , lp.cat and streams

I'm not very up on streams , I understand all the general principles ( I
think :-) ) but I have a question.

Will the allocation of a stream for cat and lp.cat depend on the buffer 
size I assume the write call in these programs use ??? Is it then likely
that cat and lp.cat make use of different size streams ???

We have some printer interfaces , some I based on the standard script ,
from AT&T I think ( the long one !! ) which make use of lp.cat and some
a colleague mistakenly used based on a Rel 5.2 script using cat. When using
the cat based script we see many stream failures ie not enough allocated.

Can anyone explain these things ??? ( replies via e-mail )

PS This occurs on an NCR32/500 running 1.01.01 ( 5.3 ).
