Printing with ftp

To print data quickly from a remote unix host on a local PC printer, I
ftp to the PC, which is running an FTP server, then "put file prn."
The file then prints locally. (This method works fine ftp'ing among
PCs as well.) I've tried this the other way, ftp'ing to the remote
host, then "put file /dev/ttyb." I get illegible output, in ascii or
image mode. lpr works fine, either from the remote host, or from the
PC to the remote printer, which has the remote host defined as the
print server.
The printer is an HP Lasjerjet 1. Here is the printcap entry:
|printer|localprinter:\
:lp=/dev/ttyb:br#9600:\
:ms=-parity:sd=/var/spool/lpd:\
:lf=/var/adm/lpd-errs:
Where should I be looking for the source of the problem? Is it with
ftp, my printcap entry, the printer, or some interaction among them?
Thanks. (E-mail preferred.)
