PC Editor and Files

hello!
I'm trying to write a pascal program that uses INPUT, OUTPUT and a FILE OF
CHAR, but cant get the compiled program to read from/write to the external
file. Am i missing some file-mapping command somewhere? I cant use the
PIX compiler, and i need to write the program in UNIX because of
memory requirements.
