I think there is a problem with sz when no permissions are set (when
the permissions line looks like "----------"). Zmodem will start the
download with a valid 'challenge', but then nothing follows. No
filename, file info, nothing. The receiving Zmodem ends up waiting a
long time and just reporting TIMEOUTs.

That is interesting to know, but that does not seem to be my problem.
I have tried often (in fact every time i got a new version of VLT or
zmodem) and repeatedly with all kinds of files, and it always fails.
The 'rz' and the xprzmodem library never seem to come into contact
with each other. I frankly suspect either rz or the unix flavour
(HPUX) as ZModem uploads to other implementations and operating
systems with VLT and xprzmodem seem to work without problem.
