problem with tip

I need help solving a problem with tip... If I'm running tip in
a window, and kill the window without exiting tip correctly,
It locks up so that no one else can use it. ie it leaves defunct
processes I can't get rid of without rebooting the machine.
Does anyone know why this happens or any way(s) to prevent it? 
I'm runing Sun OS 4.1.1
