SCO UNIX: getty & assoc. terms

I wish I had adaquate documentation so that I could answer this question 
myself.  Anyway, here it is.

I want a process to be able to change it's associated terminal.  In other
words,  I'm working under SCO UNIX, and I'm working on my own getty.  What
i'm not sure of is whether init starts up getty and set's up it's associated
terminal, or whether getty does that itself.  If init does it, how?  If getty
does it itself, how?

Any information on this would be greatly appreciated.
