Is it possible the problem is further down? I tried:
TEST = 1 2 3 \# 4 5 6
test:
echo $(TEST)
which ran the command:
echo 1 2 3 # 4 5 6
Which displayed:
1 2 3
However the following:
TEST = 1 2 3 \\\# 4 5 6
test:
echo $(TEST)
which ran the command:
echo 1 2 3 \# 4 5 6
displayed:
1 2 3 # 4 5 6
Perhaps this is what you need.
With a name like mine you learn about quoting. :-)
