As far as csh is concerned, I would try this:
if( ("$HOSTTYPE" == "sun3") && ("$TERM" == "sun") ) X11
Note the use of spaces (especially around the "==").
Also, RTFM might be helpful in the future (Reading The Friendly? Manual).
