Bingo!  This is the shell solution to my particular problem

	remsh/rsh remote-host 'sleep 30 <&- >&- 2>&- 7>&- &'

The offending fd #7 showed up in a "/etc/pstat -u pid-of-sleep-process" in
the file section.
