Help with shadow file

If this is not the right newsgroup, please let me know and I will
re-post.

I need help in trying to use the shadow password file under ISC 2.2.
Specifically, I have an old program that I am trying to port that used
the standard password routines, getpwnam, getpwent, etc.  I tried
resetting everything to use the spwd structure and getspnam, getspent,
etc. but hings still don't work.

Everything seems to go ok, until the users password check is
made and then it blows up saying passowrd invalid.

I know I am making some stupid mistake, but just can't seem to find
it.  Any help, hints or suggestions are welcome.
