That manual page for Xsight states that -v defaults to on, and that this
option overrides the -logo and -p options. Thus the correct syntax is
startx -- X :0 -logo -p 5 -v off
This works for me under Xsight 2.2.0, I don't know about older versions.

Did you disable the tty you were going to use for X? I am running xdm
on tty01. First I disabled logins on tty01 by running
# disable tty01
My /usr/lib/X11/xdm/Xservers file contains
#
# server options set by xdm
#
:0 local /usr/bin/X11/X :0 -analog -crt /dev/tty01
and xdm works fine for me.
