X11R4 vga server question

I'm currently attempting to get the VGA server written by Thomas Rowell to
work on my system without success.
In addition, I'm unable to find any info about the server (hardware
requirements, etc) so I don't know if (a) I'm doing something wrong, or
(b) It just won't run on the hardware I have.
Any attempt to run xinit or X causes a core dump. Running the server
directly results in a "memoy fault--core dumped" message.
Any pointers in the right direction would bost helpful.
PS--I have only the binaries, which I got from informatik, as I don't
have the disk space to build it myself...
Thanks in advance
Steve
