more X problems (Esix)

Xwindows is doing something new and bizarre on my Esix system.
I start X by typing 'xinit'.  I then start 'twm&'.  The first window (console)
opens ok and works normally.  When I try to start new xterms either via
the mouse/menu or by typing xterm&, the new window flashes up on the background
for a second and disappears.

I don't recall changing anything that should affect this.  I already tried
re-running xconfig, but this didn't help.
