Friends and others have been asking me about the following information.
I am a member of the technical staff, and not part of marketing, sales,
or other business units. I am posting this ONLY to offer information
on what is going on with SYS 5 r 4. I sincerely hope that providing
this information does not offend anyone in this group.
-----------------------------------------------------------------
Dallas, January 22, 1991 -- UNIX System Laboratories, Inc. and Intel
Corporation today named INTERACTIVE Systems Corporation a Principal
Publisher of UNIX System V Release 4 for Intel 386/i486 platforms.
USL will supply INTERACTIVE with a standard System V Release 4 base product,
complete with coding, integration, quality assurance and documentation.
INTERACTIVE will market, package, sell and support System V Release 4 for
Intel-based platforms.
Intel Corporation also announced that it will transfer its existing UNIX
System V Release 4 software customer base to INTERACTIVE. Intel will
continue to aggressively support the Intel System V Application Binary
Interface (iABI) efforts, and its joint development work with USL for Intel
architectural support in UNIX System V.
INTERACTIVE will package the standard System V Release 4 operating system
with value-added products that will support imaging, networking, graphical
user interface (GUIs), DOS-under-UNIX (VP/ix), applications and new
distribution media such as CD-ROM.
UNIX System Release 4 combines the best features of popular versions of the
UNIX system. It provides users of UNIX System V, XENIX, SunOS and Berkeley
Systems with application compatibility and interoperability with other
computer systems using the same networking protocols, including systems that
are not UNIX-based. In addition, System V Release 4 creates a scalable,
portable computing environment that runs on systems ranging from PCs to
supercomputers.
To further promote the availability of "shrink wrap" applications for UNIX
System V Release 4 on the 386/i486 platform, the iABI Program has been
launched by nine leading computer manufacturers and operating system
vendors. Participating companies include AT&T Computer Systems, UNIX System
Laboratories, Intel Corp., INTERACTIVE Systems Corporation, NCR Corp.,
TOSHIBA, Tyan Computers, Dell Computer Corp. and UNISYS.
UNIX System V Release 3.2 Upgrades
INTERACTIVE has instituted aggressive migration plans to assist all existing
and new System V Release 3.2 users in moving to System V Release 4.
This April, INTERACTIVE will begin marketing its first release of the UNIX
System V Release 4 family of products. Intended for developers, OEMs and
advanced end-users, it will be developed by USL and published and marketed
by INTERACTIVE.
In Q3 of 1991, INTERACTIVE will offer a second release of UNIX System V
Release 4 that will be compatible with IBCS-2, the extended binary
compatibility specification for Intel-based systems running UNIX System V.
At the same time, INTERACTIVE will deliver extension products to support
multiple graphical user interfaces (OPEN LOOK, Motif), expanding networking,
and DOS-under-UNIX (INTERACTIVE VP/ix), among others.
UNIX System Laboratories, Inc. (USL), a susbisdiary of AT&T, develops and
markets UNIX System V and related system software in source code to computer
hardware and system software vendors worldwide, under the guidance of UNIX
International, Inc. USL was formerly known as AT&T UNIX Software Operation.
INTERACTIVE Systems Corporation, a Kodak company, is a leading supplier of
UNIX products and development services to the computer industry and is a
leader in the commercial UNIX marketplace.
