Problems with VP/ix and NO CARRIER

You could use the FAS async driver instead of the original `asy'.
FAS will correctly terminate VP/ix when the modem hangs up, and
the next user will get a new getty.

FAS 2.08 was posted some weeks ago in this newsgroup.
