X11R4, Roell's server

I got the following response to my message about collecting money for
a PVGA card to send to Thomas Roell to enable him to fix problems with
this chip set. As I didn't see this as posting, I follow Phillip
Smith's request to post it for him.

By the way, I am a bit disappointed by the response to my request. Up
to now I got offers worth 15$ (fifteen). May be, just nobody is really
interested in using Thomas's server on PVGA1 boards? Anyway, at least
Phillip's suggestion to offer his old PVGA1 board will be able to
solve it.

I think it might be better if Herr Roell could receive mail.
There have been one or two good comments on the new about
PVGA problems, but Thomas seems to not have read them. I sent
my own results, but I got no reply in several days...

X386:

The beta version has the same PVGA problems: multiple diagonal "ghost" images
as did the first release. There seems to be a sync problem. It was cheaper
for me to buy a $125 ET4000 clone-board. I've tried it with several ET3000
boards with no problems. If he really needs it, I'd donate my PVGA clone,
since I now have no use for it.

There is a problem using the binary distribution with TCP. It appears to
be a STREAMS-only release. Otherwise, there's an authintication problem
for remote clients.

Clients:

Xclock does not work in the binary distribution. Nor does it
work after compiling from source. This implies a library problem.

Xpr needs a fix to use memcpy instead of bcopy. The options (printer
config, etc), are ignored. A couple of macros were needed.

BTW:

I built many more clients, and have the 

	+ HP Widgets 
	+ hpwm (Motif-like window manager)
	+ xgif (GIF previewer -- nice)

Also, if anyone is interested in the 386 GNU stuff, I have;

	gcc-1.38	GNU C Compiler
	alloca		GNU malloc substitute
	bison		GNU Yacc susbstitute
	gdbm		GNU database stuff -- (libgdbm.a, ndbm.h)

The above is, I believe, a *complete* inventory of what you need
to build, test, etc. Others should be encouraged to port more clients,
and  attempt to debug the server. This is in the true spirit of the
net. Thomas Roell *should* control changes to the package, but its
up to us to feed him bug-fixes and enhancements, not shopping lists.

I hope that doesn't seem too harsh, I'd just be glad to see others
build on what Thomas has started.
