The biggest reason for this is that the echo command register on
your modem is on. It should be ATE0, not ATE1. This gets getty all
kinds of confused. Perhaps the DCD lines and DTR lines could be

FAS will help in a couple of ways not particularly related to this
problem. It should be installed as a matter of fact.

I do not know a lot about this one. I've got vpix installed with NFS
though. I do have tcp/ip installed however ..
