ISC 2.2.1, Exabyte + IDE disk

I've been trying for the last two weeks or so to get the following
configuration working with ISC 2.2.1. The tech support people haven't been
much help, so once again I turn to the net....

What I've got:

ISC 2.2.1
25 MHz 80486 PC Clone
IDE controller + 120 Meg Microscience 7100-20 drive 
Adaptec 1542B
Exabyte 8200 tape drive


What happens:
The system starts to boot up from the hard disk, resets the tape drive (the
tape seems to be retensioning, or something), and then hangs. (the LED on the
Adaptec controller remains lit while the system hangs)

What I've tried:
I've reconfigured the HPDD so it knows about the SCSI Exabyte tape drive.
I've changed the DMA from 6 to 5 in /etc/conf/kconfig.d/space.tape.gen
I've changed the tape drive's SCSI id/address from 0 to 4
I've enabled/disabled the BIOS on the Adaptec controller.



At this point I'm willing to try just about anything to fix this problem
(e.g., a SCSI disk drive may arrive shortly), so any ideas are welcome.

P.S. Is there any way to get around the maximum ULIMIT of 12288 that I've
     run into in ISC's kconfig? (I need to be able to handle files up to
     about 10Meg in size, and it would be nice to be able to do it as a
     user other than root).
