PD software for unix abounds--far too much to list here.
Sample:

GNU emacs - best programmers editor
    gcc - ansi C compiler
    (lots more)
    prep.ai.mit.edu
    directory pub/gnu
(Put up gcc first to compile the rest.)

TeX - Typesetting system.
Binaries for i386 now available from
      math.berkeley.edu
      file pub/tex386ix.tar.Z

Misc. utilities
      wsmr-simtel20.army.mil
(very busy - try after midnight on weekends)
DONT forget 'tenex' command to ftp before copying binaries.

X11R4 server (by Tom Roell - roell at lan.informatik.tu-muenchen.dpe.de)
binaries available in US. (expo.lcs.mit.edu, I think. See
      postings on comp.unix.sysv386)

akcl - Kyoto Common Lisp (rascal.ics.utexas.edu)

What other kinds of software would you like?
