floating point problem with cc

I spent some time trying to port the ntp (network time protocol) to
ISC 2.2 and hit a hard stop. The test program, ntest, gets through
the first two of eight iterations and drops core with a floating
point exception. I asked Bill Bunton to try it since he has both a
'386 with FPU and a '486 (why would I expect the emulator :-) He
encountered the same behavior but the program worked fine with gcc.
Rather than bore everyone with the code, I'd like to know if anyone
has brought up ntp with either ISC or NCR Vr3. There's a lot of
stuff in that package and some of it looks pretty thorny. I'd like
to know if anyone else has tackled it before I go lunging up another
dead end street. Thanks,
