GCC 1.39 Installation & GAS

I recently installed gcc 1.39 for Esix 3.2d. I put gcc into /usr/local/bin
and gcc-cc1, gcc-cc1plus, gcc-gnulib, etc into /usr/local/lib.

Seems to execute fine, but I always get the error
	Assembler: cm_error.c
        aline 12        : Illegal mnemonic
        aline 12        : syntax error
*** Error code 1

So, I used gcc-cc1 1.37 and it seems to work. What is wrong? Should I install
gas? I have it, but don't know how to tell gcc to use it instead of as.

	Any help would be appreciated,

P.S. Could anyone supply me with manual pages for gcc 1.39 and g++ 1.39? thanks
