select(..., execeptfds,..) -- what exception?

      after a:

	      select( ..., exceptfds, ...)

      how do I find out what kind of exception has occurred on
      the socket(s) indicated in exceptfds?   Heck, what *are*
      the possible exception conditions?  closed?  out-of-band data?
      urgent data?  others?
