We noticed the same problem. It didn't show up when two Ultrix systems
were telneting to eachother, only when we telneted to a Ultrix machine
off of Merit (a state wide network in Michigan).
The most annoying thing is that most users are caught off guard. The type
their username first, then their password. Since it prompts twice for
the username, their password is display to anyone looking over their
shoulder!
It seems to be directly related to the 'gw', for if you login as
vmshst:: (some VMS host), then the second login isn't displayed.
We just turned of the gw telnetd.
