fork()'s lead to core dumps ? (nntpd, mail2news)

Hi!
Maybe I am dumb, but so what - I have a strange problem with software
on Ultrix 4.0. Today I tried mail2news and it core'd.
First time I tracked it to localtime(). I used gmtime instead and it
worked. Now:
The program is started by sendmail (via alias test-l: | mail2news <someparas>
(Yes, I tried every combination of "'s and |'s and sh -c etc.).
When the mail2news is started, it dumps core. The funny thing is, it
dumps core at the very first line of c-commands in the source after the
declarations in main().
Checked it with dbx, it was the first line after the declarations.
I commented the first line of the source out and it cored at the next
instruction.
Thats a pity, You can't even use printf's for debugging then :(
Its the second time I encounterd this problem, the first time it was on
the same machine, running nntpd 1.5.11 from inetd.
My question: WHY ?
Thanks in advance, Kurt
