C Compiler Split I&D?

If you compile the optimizer phase of the C compiler for split I&D, it will
not work.  The reason is rumored to be an uninitialized pointer that is not
checked for NULL; it turns out that there just happens to be something
reasonable at zero if it's not split.  Can anyone confirm this?  Has anyone
found/fixed the problem?
