compatibility mode

Has anyone had any experience with the Version 6 compatiblity
mode program that comes on the 4BSD tape.  In particular, I
would like to be able to "restor x"; the restored files are
garbage, or if on a second or later tape, the program dies
immediately with checksum error at the beginning of the new tape.
Perhaps its no accident that it's source is in with the games.
