Naive User Line Editor wanted

I would be interested in any pointers to a friendly, verbose, line editor
for use by naive users.  We have a menu oriented application system that
is usually accessed over Telenet or Tyment (so screen editors are out) which
needs something near the opposite end of some spectrum from ed.
