Well, on TOPS-20, for one, each user has a set of 'user groups' to
which s/he belongs, and each directory (not quite each file) has a
set of 'directory groups'.  If one (or more) of a user's user groups
matches one (or more) of the directory's directory groups, then
the user is granted the accesses specified by the group-access
portion of the file protection.  On our system, there are a number
of project oriented groups, plus an individual group for each user.
This provides a quite flexible system, allowing the granting of
access to a file or set of files on a per user basis, or on
a per group basis.
