I need head (really, don't smile like that)

I was trying to run the netnews stat shell that came over net.sources
a short while ago, but I don't have a routine called "head".

The invokation is:

..... | tail +2 | head -1 | awk .....

Can anyone send me a copy of head or at least tell me what it does so
I can write my own?
