Greetings. Just a short note to thank everybody who responded
to my "request for statements of interest" regarding various possible
ports of my private (not based on Unix code) implementation
of UUCP and mail generating/reading software. The response was
large enough to cause me to go ahead. So, the following versions
of my UUCP and related programs are now planned, with luck for
preliminary release around the end of the summer (via yet to be
determined mechanisms):
1) for the IBM PC
a) MSDOS I, etc.
b) MSDOS II, etc.
2) for VMS
(This will be a *native* version, not requiring any Unix emulators.)
If sufficient interest is shown, versions for Coherent and for other
machines/systems are also possible. Right now, I plan to include my
basic UUCP programs and enough mail generating/reading software
to allow for inter-machine file transfers, mail, and generation/reading
of Usenet news articles. Thusly, it should be possible for any machine
running this software to directly join Usenet if they desire, and also
to participate in many other typical UUCP activities. The software will
of course allow communication between like machines and/or between different
machines (i.e. VMS<->VMS, VMS<->UNIX, IBMPC<->UNIX, IBMPC<->IBMPC).
More details as they become available. Thanks again for your responses!
