We do it all the time.
I believe I posted our version of getty.c to net.sources. It reads
yet another /etc/tty table ("/etc/tty.init" -- maybe I should have
called it "/etc/tty.getty"?) instead of having the table hard-coded,
and has an auto-baud routine written by Fred Blonder. The basic
idea is to look at a carriage return at 2400 baud, and, based on
the resultant bit pattern, guess the real tty speed. Works pretty
well.
