vaxuba/lp.c is slow at times

We moved an LP11 from our old 11/34 running V7 to a 750 running 4.2,
and lp output is slower at times. It seems to pause for periods of
several seconds. It also occasionally won't print the tail of it's
output after a close until the next open.
The system is never very loaded, and lpf >/dev/lp0 uses 15-20% cpu.
The major significant changes I can see from the V7 driver
is the code to disable interrupts at certain points, and the timeout stuff.
Does anyone know the cause of this problem and a fix?
Please reply by mail because I usually can't keep current in this group.
