writing multi-Mbytes to disk

I would like to find out the rate at which large amounts
of data can be "dumped" to disk. Specifically, I am interested
in how fast you can write 5, 10, or 20 Mbytes into
commercially available disk drives.
I am interested in this info for small 20 Mbytes Winchesters
as well as for larger disk drives connected to mainframes.
The following assumptions are made:
(1) The entire block of 5-20 Mbytes is to be written
to contiguous locations on disk.
(2) The block is preallocated on the disk so there is
no need to worry about finding free disk blocks, etc.
(3) The processor/controller can be made as fast as needed.
The limitations on speed are those imposed by the disk drive itself.

P.S. Sorry if you have already seen this message. Our machine
(ucbvax) suffered a bad crash right after I posted this
message the first time. (I didn't take the hint :-) ).
