My XENIX 3.0 machine (Intel 310/286) uses this sort of thing to access
MS-DOS floppies. You specify /dev/floppy:msdos_pathname to a group
of MS-DOS related commands. Works rather well.
Also, V8 uses this exact method to do networking. /dev/machine_name/pathname
gets you a file on another machine transparently.
