In general, when two machines can't talk to each other, one of the
following is the cause:

1) Braindamaged local modifications
2) Incorrect control file setup
3) Parity/flow control problems on interconnect circuits/modems
4) System kernel buffering/performance problems (i.e. inability to
   consistently handle input at "high" speed).
