Can someone tell me how to get `hushlogin' on systemIII?

I think the verbose login herald of our workstation is confusing UUCP,
but I can't get hushlogin going! I have looked through login/getty
etc, looking for the string `.hushlogin' with no luck.
This is for a binary systemIII site, MicroSoft port, 68k.

Please mail replies, I don't think this question is of general interest.
