useracc() call

I managed to get myself into the position of trying to
update a device driver from 4.1 to 4.2bsd. I'm not all
that good with Un*x or C, but I muddled through up until
now.
My problem is, the driver calls a routine called 'useracc',
which keeps returning NULL and giving me an error. I suspect
the parameters I'm giving it may be wrong, but I can't find
any documentation as to what the routine is or what it's
supposed to do. Can one of the many wizards explain to me
what 'useracc' does and what it expects as parameters?
Thanks in advance.
