Why is "cat -v" a botch? If you want to see if you have junk in a
file it's a lot nicer than "od -c". And what's so terrible about "ls -C"?
The multi-column format is much nicer, and it turns out that most of the
time it does the right thing (i.e. picks 1-column vs. multi-column mode).
