Object modules on Vax's running BSD 4.2 Unix

I would like information on how to go about writing load modules
on a system running BSD 4.2 Unix.
I am trying to write a small compiler without intermediate
assembler code.
Any assistance or references would be appreciated.  I need more
than is in the manuals for 'a.out.h' etc.
