We would appreciate answers to the following questions.
* Has anybody developed LAT-protocol software that would allow this
connection to be made over the Ethernet? If so, can we get it?
Over two years ago, I tried to get the LAT spec out of DEC in order to
do a public-domain implementation for 4.2. I never succeeded. Seems the
author was interested in trying to patent the idea, then they were
going to try to develop some sort of standard from it, then who knows
what. But the bottom line was that it wasn't going to leave DEC. In
theory, Ultrix has/will have a server end, but I don't know if it has
ever been released. Or what you do if you don't want to run Ultrix.
Unfortunately, the protocol isn't as useful as it could be anyway,
since it's limited to working on a single ethernet, but that's an
entirely different discussion. They're out there, they're probably
getting cheaper, and there doesn't seem to be any way to make them work
with 4.2.
Cheers,
chris
