An early USENIX distribution had a command called move (ln move copy)
that did almost exactly what you ask.  It originated at the Rand
Corporation.  It was either recursive or not, even linked or not,
per your request.  I don't know if it has been updated for FIFO's
or symlinks or whatever is current special on your system.
