Problem with /etc/ifconfig -trailers

We have Deunas on our 750's running 4.2, and when we add the "-trailers"
option to the ifconfig command in /etc/rc the network becomes unreachable.
However, if we execute the command from a terminal no such problem ensues.
Anybody help us here??? (Mail please)
