Teletype 5620 DMDs go for around $4000 last I looked.
(Each host system also needs to license some software
at a few thousand per system.) When you consider the
"overhead" cost of supporting professional employees,
which is typically about twice their salaries, there
is no good excuse for companies not investing a modest
amount in productivity improvement tools.
