changing Fortune startup--and possible repairs

I would like to make a minor change to /etc/rc on my home Fortune 32:16,
to make /dev/tty01 publicly readable.  But I'm a little nervous about
changing /etc/rc; if I goof, the system won't come up.

When you ask a Fortune dealer for help with something like that, they
just have you reload the whole system from the floppy copy, which
wipes out all your files.

Does anyone know if it's possible to make less drastic repairs to a
Fortune that won't get through startup?  For example, can you boot from
the floppy and copy just selected files to the hard disk?

I'd appreciate whatever advice people can give, since I can think of
several ways I could make the system more convenient by slight changes
to the startup files.
