4.2bsd kernel auto-nicing, scheduling

This discussion brings a question to mind: Has anyone
ever tried to do I/O scheduling?

It seems to me that it would be nice I/O for interactive
processes (reading editor buffers, paging) be done at a higher
priority.

Did anyone do any experiments in this direction? If so, what
were the results?
