Emulex controllers for Eagle on 780

We have a number of Eagle disk drives and need controllers for them on
a VAX 11/780 running Ultrix-32 (currently 1.1 and 1.2).  We are looking
at Emulex, specifically the SC-31, SC780, and SC788.  We are leaning
toward the SC788.  Does anyone have any experience with any of these
controllers?  We would like to run them with no modifications to the
kernel, not even patching any partition sizes or stuff like that.
Also, we would like to use a board that DEC Field Service will support.

My understanding is that the hp driver will support the SC780 with
the Eagle drive with no mods to the kernel; Emulex says the SC788
looks the same as the SC780, so it should work too.  The up driver
says it will support the SC-21, which apparently looks like the SC-31.
However, the up driver supports the Fujitsu 160, not the Eagle.  I
have a feeling that it wouldn't be hard to change this, but once
again, we don't want to make *any* kernel changes.

Does anyone have any suggestions or comments?
