Blit line multiplexing

SXT driver:

I need to connect two Sys V machines together by a serial line and to
multiplex the line between 2 or more programs at either end, i.e., I want
to make the one physical line operate like several virtual links.

For a while now we've done this through a number of daemons running at
both ends, passing data between calling programs, but its inefficient and
imposes a large overhead. The advantage of this scheme is that it requires 
no kernel mods.

I'm interested in using the Sys V SXT driver as a serial line
multiplexer in much the same way as the Blit (DMD 5620) terminal does it.

Does anyone know if it's possible to emulate the Blit protocol from another
system (i.e., to make the host system believe that there's a 5620 at the
other end of the line, rather than another Sys V) ?
Is there any documentation other than the tiny 'sxt.5' entry that
describes the protocol ?

Does anyone have other alternatives to multiplexing a serial line between
user processes ?
