Let me try to clarify a few points that have been raised in recent
discussions and point to some references.
Protocols: AIX DS uses SNA LU 6.2 for network protocols. This is
true for the currently available version on the RT and for
DS 1.2, which is scheduled to be available on the RT in June.
The DS on 6.2 implementation exploits performance hooks
and other functions in 6.2, e.g., authentication mechanisms.
(Agressive caching strategies are also used, as discussed in
the references.)
An IP based implementation, DS 1.3, is scheduled to be available
on the RT and the PS/2 in March 1989.
Media: DS as currently available runs on Ethernet and SDLC links. DS 1.2
will also run on Token Ring and 802.3. 6.2 has it's own Ethernet
type field, so IP based functions, e.g., UDP, TCP, NFS, ... can
run on the same Ethernet as DS and 6.2. Similarly, both 6.2 and IP
can run on the same Token Ring or 802.3 wires.
NFS coexistence: NFS 3.2 is scheduled to be available on the RT in September.
The NFS and DS 1.2.1 implementations are designed to be
able to run on the same machine, make the same files
available for mounting and allow both NFS and DS clients
to have the same files open.
