I presume you mean that you issued the &W0 command to store the current
parameters in the modem's non-volitile RAM.  To check that they were in
fact saved, you should then issue an ATZ reset command followed by the
ATL5 command which should indicate that your setup is still in effect.
Once this is done, only an &F will restore the factory parameters.  And,
&W1 will cause the modem not store parameters.

It sounds like either your communications program, or getty if it is
running on the port, is issuing the &F command.

Unless you have source code for your dialer you'll have to write shell
script wrappers to reset the modem for those programs that dial out.

Much of this operation is dependent on the particular version of 
the modem's software in ROM.  Fortunately, Multi-Tech has a BBS
on-line for support.  They also post the latest version of their 
ROM code so, you can burn it into a set of chips for an easy
